A book that couldn’t possibly be more charming, this is a read to savor, to enjoy, and to come back to, when your heart needs reminding that life is love, and all that goes with it. The disappointments, the grief, the anger, and of course, the joy and the soaring connection.
All of these are feelings that we will see to be familiar to the three main protagonists of this wonderful story: Norry Last, the middle aged owner of a log-cabin resort in northernmost Minnesota; Wendell Eklund, a seventy two year old sourpuss, who grieves his lot in life and its challenges; and Lizzie, a precocious eight year old, with a pure and innocent heart, and an appalling home-life (not to forget her adorable canine sidekick, the sometimes prescient Mr Benson).
Our story begins when Norry, Wendell and Lizzie find themselves connected, through fate or circumstance, to each other and the woodland setting provided by Norry’s ‘Last Resort’ Inn. As the plot unfolds, we will come to cherish these wonderful characters, who come alive in a manner reminiscent of the best of Anne Tyler, unfolding with a folksy sort of vulnerability, poignancy, and the driest undercurrent of humor.
I loved this book, unable to put it down, and finished it over one (very pleasant) afternoon.
Highly recommended for lovers of character-based novels, particularly of the feel-good type, this book is a treat of the highest order, simply not to be missed.
A great big thank you to Netgalley, the author and the publisher for an ARC of this book. All thoughts presented are my own.
