An absorbing and atmospheric tale of grief and loss, intermingled with both shame and blame, and the devastation wrought in its aftermath.
Kieran, our third person POV narrator, is thirty years old, the father of a baby with his loving partner Mia. As Kieran and Mia pay a visit to their childhood home of Tasmania, Australia they are caught up in a web of memories, as they must face the shared trauma yet again of events and possibly crimes that unfolded when they were teens. As Kieran struggles to resolve the emotional fallout of these long-standing issues – issues which have darkened his relationship with his own troubled parents – tragedy, in the form of a sudden and disturbing murder, strikes the town again.
Populated with colorful and interesting characters, there are plenty of suspects and a timeline that lingers on events of the past, as well as the present.
As the backdrop of a dark and frothy sea, surging and often violent, sets the tone for the inhabitants of this town, mystery and tragedy and an undercurrent of suspense flow unchecked.
An engrossing read, which builds slowly and very deliberately to its final satisfying ending, this book is recommended for lovers of this author’s work (as is this reader), and anyone who enjoys skillfully-layered character-based crime novels, that never fail to deliver.
