#15 in the Mike Bowditch series, this is a nail-biter of a novel, which follows our hero, Mike, a game warden investigator based in the Maine North Woods, on a case which will have him facing an ex-military recluse, Mark Redmond, who is living in seclusion with his twelve year old daughter Cady.
Mike, who is something of a rebel, and is not afraid to break the rules or take risks, will certainly have his work cut out for him as he struggles to understand the backstory that governs the actions of this strange duo, a story that is shrouded in mysterious circumstances that may or may not include abuse, divorce, and a life on the run. To make matters even more opaque, Mike will encounter several characters whose motives are less than clear โ supporters or pursuers of the Redmonds, there is a tricky plot with many murky characters to be unraveled here, both for the reader, and for Mike Bowditch himself.
Brimming with urgency and an incredibly evocative sense of the pleasures and terrors of the remote woodlands, this is an action packed story that does not let up until the final few pages, where, to the great satisfaction of this reader, all is revealed.
A great big thank you to Netgalley, the author and the publisher for an ARC of this book. All thoughts presented are my own.
