For Andrew, now enjoying a new and blossoming relationship, may or may not (currently or previously) have been in love with his wife. And as our most intimate and only first-person POV voice in this tale, Andrew’s narration of the events that follow (as well as his version of the events that precede) the supposed sighting of long-lost Brie have more than a hint of unreliability.
What we know, and do not know, and just who we can trust in this gripping psychological thriller makes for explosive reading – the kind the keeps you on the edge of your seat, reading long into the night, scenarios flooding and discarded as you scramble to assemble pieces that will finally coalesce to make sense of it all.
As Brie’s life, her family, her friends and her secrets begin to unravel, it’s pretty clear that so much is still unclear – and Detective Marissa Hardy, a bulldog eternally fixated on only one suspect, may be hindering as much as helping to unpack a truth that has remained hidden for so long.
With a pace that never lets up and an atmosphere so mired in suspicion that this reader found pretty much every character potentially complicit, I loved this book, reading it entirely in one long sitting, unable to put it down, absorbed in the story, feeling for the characters (including the always-an-enigma Andrew) – ultimately finding the ending both satisfying and clever, with just the right amount of out-of-nowhere trickiness.
Highly recommended for lovers of thrillers and psychological suspense, this terrific book is sure to keep you entertained, enthralled and yes, perpetually guessing.
