The Sister-in-Law

An easy read with a fast-paced plot and lots of intrigue. The perfect read for an afternoon lie-in during a blizzard (or any reading day at all).

Megan – our first-person-POV narrator – is a twenty-eight-year old recent widow – an ethereal beauty with white-blonde hair and an aversion to physical affection. Megan loved her husband, Rick, and is understandably finding the grieving process lonely and difficult.

When Rick’s estranged (and very heavily pregnant) sister Emily makes an appearance at his funeral, Megan is quick to offer help. But could it be that all is not as it appears with Emily? The reader observes what looks like Megan’s unwitting descent into manipulation, as Emily, our second first-person-POV narrator, appears to be following a script, linked to a masterplan not yet fully revealed. Emily, a pretty woman, who is not enjoying her final weeks of pregnancy, will eventually share all with the reader, as we scramble to put the pieces together ourselves before the author’s final denouement.

How Emily and Megan play out this drama, with each of them hiding secrets that will, before too long, unwind (and perhaps astonish), makes for an enjoyable read — with enough twists and turns along the way to keep a reader entertained, and culminating in an ending that is satisfying, checks all the boxes (and was only partially guessed by this reader).

A fun and interesting read, peopled with ordinary folks, who (as in reality) are not always nice. I enjoyed this book as I did a previous read by this author.

A great big thank you to #Netgalley, the publisher and the author for an ARC of this book. All thoughts presented are my own.
