How would you handle it – in the blink of an eye, your entire world turned upside down?
Not once, in fact, but actually, twice – first, the overwhelming (and somewhat expected) devastation driven by grief-stricken loss, followed by a revelation, hidden and spectacularly unsuspected for decades, life-altering in its head-on impact.
This is a story about parenthood; about heroes, instantaneously tarnished; about the inner cracks and flaws (including the atrocious) that may lead to behavior, and ultimately, secrets, so shattering to those affected they can only be seen as impossible to reconcile.
On a perhaps deeper level, this is ultimately a story about the dance, inextricably and forever intertwined, of trust and commitment, love and safety, that begins in the earliest days of childhood and never really ends – underscoring and defining every relationship (successful or not) cultivated or attempted from that point forward.
For LA landscape designer Nate Cronin, his adorable lab-mix Cody, his girlfriend Jennifer, and all the family, friends and colleagues that occupy a place in his heart and his life, the resolution to this story (and the impending reconciliation) is not at all guaranteed (or clear-cut).
As the author leads us through the twists and turns of a life plunged into chaos and complicated by deceit, this interesting and sensitive tale is hard to put down, an unusual and thoughtful look at human imperfection and the compassionate acknowledgement of its reach.
A great big thank you to the author and the publisher for an ARC of this book. All thoughts presented are my own.
